Ilya Mikheev explained why he decided to retire from this NHL season due to injury.

The 28-year-old Vancouver forward is out for the rest of the season. He will undergo surgery on the anterior cruciate ligament of his knee.

I understand that there is now a lot of talk about my decision to play with an anterior cruciate ligament injury.

When I got injured in pre-season, I took some tests and realized I could play without hurting myself more.

Twice a week we consulted with the team doctors about how things were going. I never felt pressure, never felt inferior. It was my decision. I wanted to be ready for next season.

If I had continued to play, I would not have been ready for training camp, " the Vancouver forward wrote.
